Mary’s Meals
Mary’s meals is a charity started by Magnus Macfarlane-Barrow, and it sets up school feeding programmes in some of the world’s poorest communities. Its first project was in 2002 in Malawi with 200 children in the programme. The charity works with a volunteer community partner, who will organise the cooking and purchasing of food locally, using funds supplied by Mary’s Meals. The thinking behind the school feeding programme is that well fed children learn. The evidence is that providing the food at school, ensures a rise in enrolment, attendance and attainment.
When we started supporting Mary’s meals they were feeding 1 million children every school day in 14 countries. Today they are now working in 16 countries and feeding 1.5 million children every school day. The average cost of a meal is 7p, so to feed a child for a year it only costs £13.90.
Our Wednesday lunches will continue to support this charity and all are welcome to come at noon usually on the second Wednesday of the month.
